Sitecore XP vs XM vs SitecoreAI: Which Sitecore Platform Is Right for You?

A clear comparison of Sitecore XP, Sitecore XM and SitecoreAI (formerly XM Cloud): hosting, architecture, personalisation, analytics, upgrades, cost drivers and which suits your organisation.

Comparing Sitecore platform options

Sitecore offers three ways to run its platform, and the names have changed over time, which makes comparisons confusing. In short: Sitecore XM is the self-hosted CMS, Sitecore XP is XM plus analytics and personalisation, and SitecoreAI (renamed from XM Cloud in late 2025) is the SaaS, headless platform. Here is how they compare. For more on the rename itself, see SitecoreAI explained.

When Sitecore XM makes sense

You need a capable enterprise CMS, you want to keep hosting under your control, and your personalisation and analytics live in other tools. XM is also a common stepping stone: customers that never used XP’s marketing features can drop to XM before moving to SitecoreAI.

When Sitecore XP makes sense

You rely on xDB-based personalisation, analytics or marketing automation today, and you need self-hosting for regulatory or contractual reasons. The trade-off is infrastructure cost and periodic major upgrades — see Sitecore upgrade services.

When SitecoreAI makes sense

You want to stop running infrastructure and upgrades, you are ready for a headless front end, and you want access to Sitecore’s newest capabilities, including AI agents. For most new implementations this is now the default choice.

Compare total cost of ownership, not licence prices. Servers, upgrades and the people who run them are where self-hosted Sitecore really costs money.

Making the decision

Weigh four things: how much of XP’s marketing functionality you actually use, your hosting and compliance constraints, your appetite for a headless rebuild, and when your licence renews. If the answer points to SitecoreAI, read our migration plan. If you are comparing Sitecore with other platforms entirely, see Drupal vs WordPress vs Sitecore.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

What is the difference between Sitecore XP and XM?
Sitecore XM is the content management system on its own. Sitecore XP adds the Experience Database (xDB), analytics, built-in personalisation and marketing automation on top of XM. Both are self-hosted.
Is SitecoreAI cheaper than Sitecore XP?
Not necessarily in licence terms, but SitecoreAI removes the cost of running infrastructure and performing major upgrades, which are significant on XP. Total cost of ownership is the fairer comparison.
Can we run SitecoreAI on our own servers?
No. SitecoreAI is a SaaS platform run by Sitecore. If you need to self-host for regulatory or contractual reasons, Sitecore XP or XM remain the options.
Which Sitecore platform is best for a new implementation?
For most new implementations, Sitecore steers customers to SitecoreAI because it is SaaS, headless and where its investment is going. Self-hosted XP or XM can still make sense where hosting control or specific XP capabilities are required.
